Production of thin film solar cell technology has traditionally entailed the use of costly evaporation processes. Nanoco has developed a range of CIGS and CIS (copper indium gallium di-selenide/sulphide, copper indium di-selenide/sulphide) materials that can be deposited much more economically using conventional printing techniques. The materials are advantageous because nanoparticle synthesis is a 'bottom up' approach that enables tuning of elemental ratios and stoichiometry to meet performance requirements. Nanoco's PV nanomaterials are highly crystalline, mono-disperse particles, which absorb light across the entire visible spectrum. They are ligand stabilised and readily dispersed into organic solvent to provide nanoparticle ink. The ink can be utilised with conventional printing techniques that are readily amenable to roll to roll processing. Once printed, the layer is heated to remove the organic capping ligands and sinter the nanoparticles together, resulting in a thin semiconductor film with the crystalline structure and electronic properties required for PV.

The SentiMag® instrument uses the principle of magnetic susceptometry and generates an alternating magnetic field which temporarily magnetises the iron oxide particles in Sienna+®. The tiny magnetic signature generated by the Sienna+® particles is then detected by the probe. Sienna+® is a tracer capable of an induced magnetic response and was developed for use with the SentiMag® instrument.
